Pollen analysis for source verification

Analysis of the pollen content of honey has long been used to investigate provenance and provide a quantitative measure of floral origin (e.g. manuka pollen percentage). We provide services to major New Zealand honey producers and distributors, and overseas importers.

To fully characterize pollen content, not only the botanical species present but their relative abundance and concentration should be identified. This is critical when honey with different pollen profiles are blended, so that a blend has a predictable percentage of characteristic pollen. Accurate measurement depends on close attention to technical details.

Analyses include honey colour density (Pfund) determination at no extra charge.

Isotope analysis for honey adulteration

Intentional adulteration of honey with sugar (where glucose syrup or cane sugar is added to stretch high value honey) is a common occurrence in many overseas countries. Some bee keeping practices can also lead to the introduction of sugar that causes honey to fail sugar adulteration tests. Sugar solutions are often fed to hives to give sustenance throughout winter, or to enable hives to survive during poor nectar flow. However feeding too much sugar or prolonging it once nectar flow begins means that bees can use sugar syrups to make honey instead of nectar.

To protect consumer confidence, we offer honey producers and buyers a variety of isotope tests.
