Thermal pools can be fed directly by geothermal water ("mineral" pools), or they can contain either town-supplied freshwater that has been heated by geothermal energy.
There are more than 100 mineral springs used for bathing in the North and South Islands.

- Hot pools dug at the edge of a cold stream, like Sylvia Flats in the South Island or on the coast at the tide level, as at Hot Water Beach in the Coromandel or at Kawhia on the coast near Hamilton.
- Warm well bore waters fed directly to swimming pools.
