GNS Science and Victoria University of Wellington’s joint Organic Geochemistry Laboratory is one of only two organic geochemistry facilities in New Zealand and provides: 

  • a dedicated space for researching environmental, climate change and petroleum samples;  
  • a wet chemistry facility for the extraction of a range of organic compounds from environmental samples;  
  • separation, purification and analysis of organic compounds by gas and liquid chromatography, and compound-specific isotope analyses

The research directions of our biomarker capability comprises environmental and climate change and petroleum applications. We work on ancient and modern aquatic and terrestrial systems in New Zealand, Antarctica and other regions in the world using lake and ocean sediment, soil and rock, and petroleum samples.
