The database contains locations, descriptions and analyses of rock and mineral samples collected from onshore and offshore New Zealand and Antarctica by government, university and industry geologists. This is a Nationally Significant resource.
Nationally Significant Databases are those datasets and collections registered as important for New Zealand, and as such, they are supported by long-term government funding.
Overview
The database is operated by GNS Science, with data contribution from GNS Science, and Auckland, Waikato, Massey, Victoria, Canterbury and Otago universities. The database is comprised of the National Petrology Reference Collection and the Petlab database.
The National Petrology Reference Collection contains rock and mineral samples from the earliest days of the Geological Survey to today. It is the single most comprehensive collection of New Zealand rocks and minerals in the world and is a valuable national resource.
The Petlab database contains locations, descriptions and analyses of rock and mineral samples collected from onshore and offshore New Zealand and Antarctica by government, university and industry geologists. Information has been sourced from journal articles, theses and open file reports. Includes 10,000 records from the Geophysical Properties of New Zealand Database.
