About 5 Minute Volcano
5 Minute Volcano is a chaotic, entertaining and educational game based on the popular 5 Minute Dungeon game by Wiggles 3D. Players work together to use the knowledge and skills of their character role to survive volcano hazards including ashfall, pyroclastic flows of hot gas and tsunami. The game teaches students teamwork, problem solving and communication skills while also learning about volcanoes and the important roles everyone plays in responding to natural hazards.
Beneath the Waves volcanologist and previous winner of the Prime Minister’s Science Communication Prize Ben Kennedy describes the game as
“the most fun you can have with a volcano without actually seeing lava!”
The game has been developed by the Beneath the Waves programme in collaboration with HIT Lab NZ – a world-leading research centre at the University of Canterbury specialising in human interface technology. The game is not available for public purchase and will be rolled out to select schools across New Zealand over the next year.
Schools will also receive a teacher’s guide and student workbook, developed with teachers, to support the learning goals of the game and evaluate the knowledge uptake. Though the game is designed for students aged 11 – 12, it can be played from ages 8+, and even younger for the volcano enthusiasts out there!
5 Minute Volcano was developed in collaboration with Ngati Awa and Kura o te Paroa to ensure the game is suitable for students, culturally connected to Aotearoa and importantly, a lot of fun.

About Beneath the Waves
The Beneath the Waves programme is the first to comprehensively map the structures of Whakaari/White and Tūhua/Mayor islands from seafloor to summit. The new data is being used to build robust simulations and models that can help monitor, assess, and forecast possible hazard scenarios for the Bay of Plenty from future volcanic events.
The programme is working closely with local emergency managers, iwi, councils, and schools to guide future work to reduce the vulnerability of communities, infrastructure, and cultural taonga along the Bay of Plenty coast.
Beneath the Waves is a GNS-led MBIE-funded programme delivered with collaborators from University of Canterbury, Massey University, Victoria University of Wellington, East Coast Labs and Bay of Plenty Civil Defence and Emergency Management.
