Proud winners of the Best Hi-Tech Solution for the Public Good award at the 2022 NZ Hi-Tech Awards
It was with high excitement and great pride that the RiskScape team from GNS and NIWA, with Toka Tū Ake EQC and Catalyst, were awarded the Best Hi-Tech Solution for the Public Good award at the NZ Hi-tech awards black tie gala dinner at the TSB Arena earlier this month.
Just one of many entries in the Public Good category, only two were selected finalists. RiskScape shared that honour with Kara Technologies, which won a highly commended award for its outstanding work improving accessibility and quality of service for people who are deaf by providing sign language using digital avatars.
A fabulous event that showcases the very best of Kiwi technology and innovation, the awards dinner is described as an evening of celebration, inspiration, networking, food, and entertainment. The work and the extraordinary talent being celebrated at the awards is summed up beautifully in the closing words of the Prime Minister’s address, where she acknowledges the experts of the technology sector. “You aren’t just the best in the world, you are the best for the world.” We think that describes our RiskScape team to a tee!
This award is a well-deserved recognition of the impact that RiskScape makes in helping New Zealand to understand the risk of, and build resilience to, natural hazards. It’s the outcome of years of hard work across GNS, and with our partners at NIWA, Toka Tū Ake EQC, and Catalyst.
RiskScape uses information about our hazards, our people, and our built environment to better understand the risks from natural hazards. It helps us understand the impact of natural hazards on our people and property, so that we can anticipate impacts and better respond to and recover from them.

RiskScape uses information about our hazards, our people, and our built environment to better
understand the risks from natural hazards.
RiskScape is trusted software designed and developed in New Zealand and uses New Zealand science to understand the impact of natural hazards on all people and property.
The software helps us understand the magnitude and severity of future natural hazard events, such as a large alpine fault earthquake or Central North Island volcanic eruption, so that our reinsurance is right size and so that we can anticipate the impacts and better respond to and recover from them.
Flood modeling is used in New Zealand by central government as well as local governments and organizations to help them understand the impacts of flooding and respond to the hazard.
New Zealand is at risk of many natural hazards. We need to better understand the risks associated with these hazards so that we can make more resilient buildings and make New Zealanders safer.
It's a great example of how our agencies work together to improve the resilience of natural hazards in New Zealand.
