Today GNS Science is celebrating Dr. John Kennedy’s appointment as a Fellow of the Royal Society Te Apārangi.

The honour recognises his career of pioneering research in ion-beam physics and nanotechnology.

A legacy of innovation

From revolutionising surface technology for global industries to driving innovation in clean energy, John’s impact spans multiple fields. His research in ion-beam engineering has led to game-changing advances, including microstructured low-energy surfaces. Simply, John’s work has shaped the way we understand and apply materials science.

One of his most notable achievements is the development of a surface modification technology, which has been adopted by various manufacturing industries to enhance product performance.

Leading New Zealand’s ion-beam capabilities

Our nationally unique capability of accelerator ion-beam technology allows us to alter a material’s properties by depositing other elements, atom by atom, within and on its surface. The primary drivers for this work are the private sector high-technology enterprises for whom we are developing innovative nanomaterials.

John’s leadership has propelled New Zealand to the forefront of ion-beam technology. He played a key role in establishing the country’s first large-scale ion-beam equipment for industry applications, a capability now in high demand among global research institutes.

His expertise has also driven advancements in hydrogen production, helping to lay the foundation for New Zealand’s first deep-tech hydrogen startup, bspkl.

Beyond this, his work in magnetic materials is accelerating progress in wireless EV charging, and his research in thermoelectric materials is unlocking new ways to harness waste heat as a power source.

John’s influence extends beyond industry too.  His advancements in cutting-edge ion-beam analysis techniques have provided regional councils with powerful tools to track and mitigate water and air pollution. This research has shaped environmental policy and improving air quality across New Zealand.

Strengthening cross-sector collaboration

Throughout his career, he has been a driving force in fostering collaboration between research institutions, commercial partners, and policymakers to translate scientific discoveries into real-world applications.

His work with global industry leaders has ensured that New Zealand’s scientific innovations make an impact beyond the lab, shaping the future of clean energy, advanced materials, and sustainable technologies.

John's career is a leading example of what happens when researchers, industry, and government work well together.
