Significant progress for New Zealand's energy security
In an exciting step toward securing significant renewable energy, the New Zealand Government has announced that up to $60 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund will be ringfenced to explore the potential of supercritical geothermal technology.
GNS Science is incredibly proud that our science has demonstrated the potential of supercritical geothermal technology to meet a significant amount of energy demand in the future, and to make a contribution to New Zealand’s target for net-zero emissions by 2050.
We are excited to demonstrate how this investment in evidence-based science will unlock greater economic and energy potential for the Waikato Region.
This announcement has been informed by our research programme “Geothermal: The Next Generation” which was funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Endeavour Research Fund, and our decades of work in the region and geothermal sector.
"The science has confirmed that supercritical geothermal resources are available and abundant in the Taupō Volcanic Zone.” said Dr Isabelle Chambefort, Energy Futures Leader at GNS Science
“This investment and support from the Government is critical to derisking and developing the technologies that will harness this huge potential. It continues to position New Zealand and the energy industry as a world leader in geothermal technology development.”
