Putting down roots in the Philippines
During September 2023, GNS was incredibly proud and excited to have our staff attending and speaking at the 4th Philippine International Geothermal Conference(external link). James Patterson, Geothermal Reservoir Modeller represented GNS at the conference, while the night before the conference Mark Gibson, Business Development Manager – Geothermal Industries had the opportunity to be a part of announcing the GNS Science and MB Century Relationship Agreement(external link) from the home of the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines, Peter Kell.
In recognition of our blossoming relationship with the Philippines Department of Energy, a Philippine Teak Tree has been planted on GNS’ behalf.
The progress and growth of the tree can be viewed on the BINHI Communitree(external link) platform (search for GNS Science under the Select Planter section).
Growing global geothermal
As the third-largest geothermal energy generator in the world, the Philippines holds a pivotal role in the future of geothermal energy. The Philippines aims to grow their renewable energy use to 35%, around 1900 MW (which is more than New Zealand’s usage today) by 2030 and raising to 50% by 2040 through their National Renewable Energy Program.
To support this significant step-up, GNS and our New Zealand-based partners, MB Century, signed a relationship agreement in Manila(external link) last year on the eve of the conference, to work together and officially support the Philippines geothermal sector in achieving the ambitious energy and decarbonization goals set by the government.
