New Zealand Geothermal Analytical Laboratory (NZGAL)
Our mission is to deliver the highest quality services to the geothermal industry. We achieve this by working across the energy sector – with New Zealand’s major geothermal field operators and energy providers, and with researchers, developers and innovators. Our work also supports the development of geothermal facilities in other countries.
Our Expertise
We specialise in gas and water analysis for geothermal, volcanic and groundwater environments. We offer a full range of routine and non-routine analyses and we also have the expertise to develop special treatment methods to cater for difficult or unusual samples.
Our Equipment
NZGAL is equipped with the very latest technologies producing the most precise and reliable results. Our instrumentation includes:
- ICP-MS
- ICP-OES
- Ion Chromatography
- HPLC, FIA
- gas chromatography
- auto titrators
Accreditation
We are IANZ accredited (ISO/ IEC 17025:2017) for analysis of groundwaters and geothermal waters, and for geothermal/volcanic gases. This accreditation covers staff training, quality control, methodology and management, and is assessed annually by IANZ.
Our Clients
We work closely with the energy sector in New Zealand and overseas, and we provide specialist services and advice to central and local government and their agencies, industrial and agricultural clients and consultancies. We work in partnership with iwi/Māori to understand, explore, develop and protect the energy potential of their land and resources.
Location
NZGAL is at GNS Science’s Wairakei Research Centre, based in Taupo - New Zealand’s geothermal heartland. NZGAL subcontracts isotopic analysis to the Stable Isotope laboratory at GNS Science’s National Isotope Centre (NIC) in Gracefield, Wellington and to the Water Dating Laboratory at GNS Science’s Avalon site in Lower Hutt.
Our team
NZGAL is operated by a team of 11 specialist staff, led by Laboratory Manager, Stuart Sanderson.
