SchoolEmissions CuriousMinds Booklet Diagramsforwebsite3

As part of the Drive it Down! Measuring and mitigating school-gate transport emissions project we have created teaching resources to support carbon cycle learning for children in primary school (Years 5-6), and to encourage the development of student-led initiatives for fossil fuel emissions reduction.

These resources are free to download, and can be adapted to suit your local curriculum and curriculum levels, and ākonga (students)’s learning needs. Each resource includes instructions for use.

Welcome and overview of carbon cycle teaching resources

Our guide to the carbon cycle literacy package and how to use the resources

Carbon cycle and climate change booklet

A 20-page full colour booklet introducing the science of climate change, the global carbon cycle, carbon sources and sinks, the urban carbon cycle, atmospheric mixing and more.

Discussion cards

A card game to raise awareness and encourage discussion about the complexity of climate change issues, solutions and the connections with our places and professions.

Memory cards

A card game to facilitate learning of scientific vocabulary related to greenhouse gases, while fostering their creativity and curiosity.

Kahoot! Quiz

A fun quiz to familiarise students with carbon cycle topics. Most of the questions are related to greenhouse gas emissions within cities, stimulating student’s awareness of greenhouse gas sources in urban areas, and related mitigation strategies.

Online game – Auckland GHG Invaders

An online game (desktop only) to stimulate students’ thinking to develop strategies to reduce their own (and their communities) carbon emissions.

Additional resources

A sheet of additional resources for teachers to extend inquiry learning around the carbon cycle and urban transport emissions, including articles, online resources, and practical exercises.
